Since our remit is not to provide a historical description of English painting, we have taken the liberty of dealing separately first of all with the Dutch elements in English portraiture. It has been a somewhat laborious enumeration with plenty of names. We must now examine the aspects that will complete our characterisation of painting in England in the period under review, the prerequisite for which is that Dutch artists were involved. First of all, then, what did Dutch artists paint in the reigns of James I (ruled 1602-1625) and Charles I of England (ruled 1625-1649) and which Dutch paintings were in demand?
